Democracy in Africa Research Unit, Centre for Social Science Research, University of Cape Town

About us

The Centre for Social Science Research (CSSR) is an interdisciplinary research centre dedicated to conducting and building capacity for systematic, policy-relevant social science research in South Africa, the region and across Africa.

The Democracy in Africa Research Unit (DARU), a sub-unit of CSSR, strengthens empirical social science research capacity in Africa. It supports and conducts systematic research on key factors that shape the survival and quality of democracy in South Africa and the rest of the continent. The unit director, Professor Robert Mattes, is also a co-founder of the Afrobarometer network and professor of political studies at the University of Cape Town.
