Sibusiso Nkomo

Position: Head of Communications, Strategic Partnerships

Sibusiso oversees the management of the Afrobarometer communications team and supports the director of engagement on strategic communications and partnerships.

Over the past decade, he has worked in public relations, journalism, and research.  Sibusiso began his journalism career through the Independent Newspapers Cadet School in Cape Town and then reported on social and political issues for the Cape Times, Cape Argus, and Sunday Independent until 2013.

After journalism, he moved into research at think tanks, working initially for Good Governance Africa in Johannesburg, where he worked as a researcher and editorial assistant on governance in Africa.

He then joined Afrobarometer in July 2014 as communications coordinator for Southern Africa and researcher based at the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation in Cape Town. He was responsible for coordinating the communications activities of 10 countries in the region and writing various papers on South Africa.

In 2017 he became deputy communications manager for the broader Afrobarometer network and has been integral in expanding the reach of AB with a focus on strategic communications, partnerships, and improved media relations.

Sibusiso is a registered chartered public relations practitioner (CPRP)  with the Public Relations Institute of Southern Africa (PRISA). He received a MA in journalism and media studies from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. He is also a graduate of Stellenbosch University, holding a postgraduate diploma in marketing and a BA in socio-informatics, political science, and policy studies.

He is  a visiting academic and management committee member of the Institute for Democracy, Citizenship and Public Policy in Africa at the University of Cape Town (UCT), Afrobarometer's technical support partner. He has also been a guest lecturer in the Department of Political Studies and the Centre for Film and Media Studies at UCT.
